The ugly roommate picture we took from Taino Cove because it was bright and we couldn't see anything. |
It was a three hour drive from Treasure Beach (Taino Cove) to Kingston (University of the West Indies).
We piled on to our new bus and set off for the ride. We watched the Bob Marley Tribute Concert that featured greats like Ziggy, Eryka, Lauryn Hill, Eve and many others. It was a great video, we all enjoyed it.
We stopped for a lunch snack time. We FINALLY got to taste the Jamaican Fast Food equivalent- they are called Patties. And just like Burger King and McDonald's there are two. Juici and Tastee. We stopped at a Juici.
Basically, it is a pastry with whatever filling you want. I opted for the beef one, because Jay says it was the most basic one.
Okay, so they were actually good! Probably the most processed food I have eaten in Jamaica so far but it was good. You know what it tastes like? Hamburger Helper!!!
One thing that I miss the most is drinks from America. And I quickly learned the trick to be satisfied with drinks.
1- You will of course find American brands here- Coke, Pepsi yadda yadda yadda.
2- You will be dissatisfied because they are bottled here and taste different (which is okay for like a day)
3- Juice is like, " take that Mango and juice it"
So how do you find drinks? Check the label folks! If it is bottled in America, it will be familiar. Don't get me wrong, I am drinking local stuff as well (Ocean Spray is oddly extremely popular here) but some people like Brooke will never be satisfied because all the diet coke here is locally bottled.
With a quick stop at the grocery store that is attached to the mall, we made it to UWI!
We are staying in their guest housing units called the Nuffield Flats. They are huge quad apartments with A/C and cable. It sounds crazy, but we are SO excited! We each have our own room and it is very comfortable.
Welcome to UWI!
